Rare Breeds: English Leicester
Phillipa Baird, alongside her self-proclaimed "shepherdess' assistant" husband, RM Baird, nurture a flock of English Leicester in Tasmania.
Their English Leicester flock runs separately from their merino flock. The pastures are well kept ensuring the fleece have very low veggie matter.
Phillipa sells her wool products directly to fibre enthusiasts. The team uses the internet readily and is responsive to email requests. They enjoy getting email and phone call inquiries about their wool products.
The sheep are shorn when the staple is six to eight inches long, though it can be shorn to other desired lengths upon request. No external chemical is used. Lambs are born early September and shorn on their first birthday.
Each fleece is carefully prepared by the shepherdess and is a treat to receive in the mail.
